Personal Background:

Ferdinand Friis Hintze was born at Roskilde, Denmark (map) in 1854, the son of Anders Hintze and Karen Sophie Swenson Nielsen, both of whom were born in Denmark.  Ferdinand was married four times.  Ferdinand's family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark when he was a child. 

His family immigrated to America in 1864 on a ship named Monarch of the Sea (see passenger list manifest #'s 135-139 where their last name was misspelled as Nintze) and settled in Big Cottonwood, Utah (now call Holladay, Utah (map)).

                            b.     6 May 1884: Arrived in Copenhagen (map) at 30 years of age.

                            c.     28 May 1884: Assigned to Aalborg (map), Denmark.

                            d.     1 Jul 1885: Banished from Denmark by the government and assigned to Christiana (Oslo (map)), Norway.

                            e.     18 Jun 1886: Started journey home from Oslo to Utah.

                            f.      6 Jul 1886: Arrived in New York City and leaves for Utah.

                            g.     mid-July 1886: Arrived home in Utah.

4)  1886 - 1890 (39 months): Turkey

                            a.     1 Nov 1886: Left Salt Lake City.

                            b.     17 Nov 1886: Arrived in England.

                            c.      6 Jan 1887: Left London for Turkey.

                            d.     16 Jan 1887: Arrived in Constantinople (now Istanbul (Map))

                            e.     Jan - Aug 1887: Studied Turkish, taught the Gospel, and translated Church pamphlets into Turkish.

                            f.      1 Sep 1887: Appointed to preside over Turkish mission and began teaching the Gospel in Turkish interior around Sivas. 

                            g.     18 Dec 1889: Left Constantinople for London.

                            h.     4 Jan 1890: Left England.

                            i.      23 Jan 1890: Arrived in Ogden, Utah.

5)  1897 - 1899 (26 months): Turkey and Palestine

                            a.     30 Dec 1897: Left Salt Lake City.

                            b.     18 Jan 1898: Arrived in Liverpool.

                            c.      21 Jan 1898: Left Liverpool for Birmingham.

                            d.     26 Jan 1898: Left England, traveled via Rome, Cairo, Haifa, Tripoli.

                            e.     28 Feb 1898: Arrived in Aintab (now Gaziantep (map)) where there was a group of Church members.  Installed as a roving missionary.

                            f.      Jul 1899: Appointed mission president, secured Turkish permission to publish publish and books.

                            g.     20 Dec 1899: Released as mission president.

                            h.     23 Dec 1899: Left Constantinople for home via Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Berlin (again), Hanover, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, New York, Omaha.
