  Of the following picture, the photos of the oil portraits are from a collection of members of the "black" Steiger family of Bern, Switzerland.  The portraits are believed to have traveld with Johann de Steiguer when he immigrated to the US in 1819.  They were subsequently handed down through generations of descendents and were donated to the Ohio University in 1950 by the wife of the late Rear Admiral Louis Rodolph de Steiguer following his death in 1947.

Baron Johann Rodolph de Steiguer:

primitive picture painted of Johann -- most likely painted after his immigration to America.

Johann Rudolph Von Steiger (1743-1805):

The father of Baron Johann Rudolph de Steiguer (who immigrated to America). This portrait is a copy made in 1871. The original was painted in 1775.

Elizabeth de Tavel:

Wife of Johann Rudolph. Her picture was a companion to Johann Rudolph's and is also a copy.

Emanuel Steiger (1642-1709):

The father of Sigmund Emanuel Von Steiger. Painting dated 1692.

Sigmund Emanuel Von Steiger (1666-1725):

His parents were Emanuel Von Steiger (1642-1709) and Magdalena Von Ligerz. Sigmund was a member of the Great Council of Bern with it was a republic. He married his first wife, Ursula Tscharner, in 1687 (no children). He married his second wife, Dorothia Salome Von Graffenried, in 1696 (4 children: Katherine; Salome; Emanuel; & Johann Rudolph).

Countess Dorothia V. Graffenried:

Second wife of Sigmund Emanuel. Shown at age 25. Painted in 1703. The coat-of-arms of the V. Graffenried family was a burning stump on three green hills with a gold background; two red stars on either side.

Hans Rudolph Steiger (1575-1645):

Date shown on back of portrait is 1639.

Schultheiss Nicklaus Freiderich von Steiger (1729-1799):

Schultheiss was the last president of the old republic. The portrait is found in the Historical Museum of Berne.
