BIOGRAPHICAL:
(The following information on G. David Uhl and family was obtained from The Uhl Connection First Edition by Harriett Uhl McManus, published by Harriett Uhl McManus, Ocala, Florida, December 1999)
G. David Uhl and his wife, Ursula ( Wagner) were the first of our ancestors to come to Wood County, Virginia about 1794. The children and families did not follow until about 1801 and George came in 1808.
The first American record of G. David Uhl was when he entered this country by way of Pennsylvania. He crossed the ocean in October 1754. As far as the ship records show he was alone with no family with him. David and his friend Alexander Finck left the village of Bretten at the same time, both were in trouble with the German law. David, according to the municipal court records, had admintted to having stolen oak branches from the municipal forest and was sentenced to 2 pounds Heller. (A heller is a small coin or a farthing.) Alexander Finck was in trouble over an oxen deal. David's case was March 11, 1754 and Alexander's was March 18. Alexander and David both sailed on the ship Bannister. I think David and Alexander were cousins.
David left his Mother, Maria Agnes (Steinmetz), born January 12, 1702, daughter of Johann George Steinmetz, and stepfather Johann George Wanner. David's father was Johann David Uhl who was born abt. 1688, and died 14 July 1746 in Bretten, Germany. All of David's siblings had passed away by the time he sailed on the Bannister.
David settled in Roxborough Twp. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On July 27, 1761 he married Ursula Wagner, daughter of Jacob and Margaretha Wagner. Jacob was their first son and was born December 27, 1766.
I don't know how long David and his family lived in Germantown. There were no more children baptized in the St. Michaels Church which leads me to believe that they moved before the next child, David Jr., was born 1768. Ann was probably born first, as her name is first in David Sr's will. The heirs were usually named with the eldest to the youngest. I have found no record of Ann's birth nor David Jr's.
All indications are that David Sr was a farmer. He seemed to buy land and after a few years sell and move closer to his destination of Wood County, Virginia.
It can only to be speculation where they went next and when....the family stopped in Frederick, Maryland for about seven years, (1778-1785) where two more children were born. Catherine born 1779 and Johann George born 1783.
