General Notes for Child David Crockery VARNER
BIOGRAPHICAL:
"Varner is located in Kingman County, White Township,.... The Homestead Act of 1862 is partly responsible for the establishment of Varner. The idea of free land in exchange for improvement of a homestead appealed to David Varner, who headed towards Kansas to take advantage of this opportunity. Mr. Varner was born on August 1, 1841, in what is now Parkersburg, West Virginia, and he was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Varner.
On August 4, 1841, David enlisted at Ottawa, Illinois, to be a member of the Yankee troops. He was captured and made a prisoner of war at Hartsville, Tennesee, in December 1862, but he was shortly released. He received several gunshot wounds, one of which was in his right hand and left him without the use of this hand. David was discharged from the army in February 1865. On November 5 1871, Mr. Varner was united in marriage with Adeline A. Brady, and they had five children: Mary, Rose, Evanine, Birt, and Arthur.
With five children Mr. and Mrs. Varner started out from Illinois to Kansas by rail in 1878. Once they arrived in the area they drove wagons and horses to Smoots Creek Valley which was later to be the town of Varner. The early years were difficult ones due to grasshoppers and droughts. David's wife, Adaline, did not survive the hardships and died on August 11, 1885." -from "Almost Gone" by Rita Ravens, April 12, 1968
