General Notes (Husband)

BIOGRAPHICAL:
Rebecca's earliest known ancestor in America was Edward Phelps, Sr.

Edward, Sr. is supposed to be a younger brother of Henry and Nicholas, who came on the "Hercules" in 1634, and arrived in Massachusetts 16 April 1634 from London, England. The father of Edward Phelps, Sr. is not known, but his mother appears to be Ellinor Moulton, who married (1).....Phelps, and m (2) as a 2nd wife to Thomas Trusler (or Tresler).

Thomas speaks of "Father Moulton". Since a Robert Moulton, Sr. and a Robert Moulton, Jr. were witness to her will, it is believed that her maiden name was Moulton.

Ellinor's will was dated 15 Feb 1654 and proved 26 Jun 1655. Since the inventory was taken 13 Mar 1655, she died between 15 Feb 1654 and 13 March 1655 (Essex County, Massachusetts Probate Records (publ.) V. 1 pp. 183, 211; Essex Quarterly Court Records V. 1 p. 356
-From research by Mildred Sussell

BIRTH:
Edward Sr. may possibly be from Bolton, England, but Mildred Sussell found no proof of this.
Edward is reported to have come to America from London, England with his older brothers, Nicholas and Henry, on the ship "Hercules" which arrived 16 April 1634. The mother may have already been a widow, and may have come with the sons.

In his mother's will (Ellinor Trusler) dated 15 February 1654 and proved 26 June 1654, she gave "My house and ground at the towne to my son Edward." She also gave him the "sad collored cloak,...,the old brass pott, the least of the brass pans, two deep pewter platters,..., a coverlet, a blanket, with one pair of sheets." She also gave to her grandsons, Samuel and Edward, each a "yearling calf".

Edward and Elizabeth settled in Newberry and Andover, Massachusetts. They were in Andover by 1678 when he and his son, Samuel, took the oath of allegiance there.

CHILDREN:
All his children were reported to be born in Newbury, but only John is recorded there.

ANCESTRAL FILE HAS MUCH DIFFERENT NAMES AND INFORMATION.
I HAVE RECORDED RESEARCH ONLY FROM MILDRED SUSSELL.
Ancestral File also lists these names as children:
Elinor b. abt 1648
Edward b. abt 1649
Bridget b. abt 1652

DEATH:
He died suddenly.

WILL OF EDWARD PHELPS:
On 31 Mar 1691 Elizabeth Phelps wrote to the Court sitting at Ipswich asking her husband's disposition be readily taken care of--he died without a will.

"Whereas it hath pleased God, to take my husband, Edward Phelps out of this world, lately, by death, and soe suddenly that he had not time, or strength, (after his sickness seized him,) for to sett his house in order by disposal of his worldly goods by any written testament, as could have been desired, by those nextly concerned my self and children, whoe were only concerned in his estate (except creditors) unanimously agreed as to ye division of it, to which agreement we have all sett our hands and which will be presented herewith, but my age, weakness and many bodily infirmities, will not suffer me personally to wait upon yo'r Hon. to acknowledge ye same, Doe therefore begg this und'r my hand may be accepted by your Hon'rs as to ye agreement as if I had personally appeared and owned ye same, which will lay a strong obligation upon"
Yo'r Hon'rs humbley devoted servant
he 2 sons, Samuel and Edward were made administrators. Samuel and Edward, and the 2 sons-in-law, Joseph Ballard and William Chandler signed the agreement.

BURIAL:
Ancestral File states buried in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts

General Notes (Wife)

BIRTH:
Some family histories say she was born about 1640/1 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, but she had to have been older than that to be the mother of all the children of Edward Phelps, Sr., the oldest of whom was born about 1646.

DEATH:
91 years at death

CHILDREN:
Family histories also name the 2 children who came with them from England as John and Joanna. One family history does not name them, but says they came with two children. I believe Elizabeth has to be the oldest, and probably also came with her parents.

Notes (Marriage)

MARRIAGE:
Ancestral File states married in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts

General Notes for Child Samuel PHELPS

BIOGRAPHICAL:

Samuel's grandmother, Ellinor Trusler, in her will gave him a yearling calf.
He took the oath of allegiance in 1678.
Samuel was a cloth-weaver.

In 1692 Samuel was in a tax rate in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. In 1695 he was one of 20 chosen to fight the Indians in Capt. Garner's Company.

In 1697 Samuel and his wife, Sarah, and his brother, Edward, and his wife, Ruth, sold land together.

CHURCH:
Samuel was admitted to the South Church of Andover 10 May 1713.

General Notes for Child John PHELPS

MARRIAGE:
Unmarried

DEATH:
Killed by Indians while on a survey at Scarsborough or Black Point.

General Notes for Child Eleanor PHELPS

BIOGRAPHICAL:
Eleanor and William settled in Westford, Middlesex, Massachusetts

General Notes for Child Edward PHELPS Jr.

DEATH:
Death has been stated by some as 3 December - perhaps burial date.

WILL:
His will was dated 28 February 1735 and proved 4 February 1748.
All children except Lydia and the first Bathsheba were mentioned in his will.

BIOGRAPHICAL:
Edward was a cloth-weaver by trade.
He served as selectman and town treasurer from 1725-1743. They lived in Andover until about 1708, when they moved to Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts.

The first land recorded for him in Lancaster was 10 May 1710 when he bought his farm in Lancaster.

CHURCH:
He and his wife were received into the Lancaster Church from Andover Church 4 November 1716.

CHILDREN:
One source says the first 5 children were born in Andover and the rest in Lancaster, but all may have been born in Andover, as there is no evidence of their being in Lancaster until after the last child was born.
