OBITUARY:
Plains Journal, November 21, 1908 In Memory of Charles W. Ivers
"Another old soldier has been mustered out. Charles W. Ivers was born in Ohio on 22nd day of March 1838. He went to Illinois in 1852 and lived on a farm in La Salle County, until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted in the 26th Illinois Infantry. He was discharged in July 1865 and returned to Illinois, where he lived until 1898. Moving to Missouri and then to Reno County, Kansas, where he settled near Pretty Prairie where he lived until May 1908, at which time he moved to Plains. Early in life he was converted, and united with the Methodist church, which faith he adhered to all his life, and died with a prayer upon his lips. Mr. Ivers had been in poor health for some time, but no one thought that his life journey was so near ended, but the end came suddenly. He had been up town two or three times the day before he died, had gotten in his kindling for the next morning's fire, had planned for work the next day, had retired for the night and seemed to be in his usual health and strength when he was suddenly taken with delirium, and soon passed into the great beyond. The funeral obsequies were held Sunday afternoon and were attended by a large concourse of freinds and relatives of the deceased. His remains were laid to rest to await the dawn of the great resurrection morn, in the Plains cemetery, peace to his ashes and sympathy to his friends."
